Boys Under 16 Champion 2019 - George Durkan Bishop's Stortford

THE 2019 BOYS UNDER 16 CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS WITH COUNTY PRESIDENT HUGH WIKNER

Our last County Boys event of the 2019 season took place yesterday (Thu 31 Oct) with the Boys Under 16 Championship taking place at Redbourn Golf Club.

Last year's event at Aldenham was cancelled due to heavy rainfall leading up to the event and on the day itself, so the recent respite in the rainfall in the school half term was very welcome.

Bright but cool conditions with a gusty wind were the order of the day but the sun shone throughout the round for all 49 competitors playing 18 holes medal for various age scratch and handicap prizes. The ages on the day ranged from those Boys whom had already turned 16 during the year at the oldest to just 10 years old at the youngest.

Our reigning County Boys Champion, George Durkan of Bishop's Stortford, who won the main Boys trophy and the Malcolm Reid Trophy for the best U16 gross score on that day at his home club back in July, would also come out on top on this day, topping off a fantastic year for George, which included a recent England Boys U16 Cap in the international match at Hunstanton against Ireland. George returned a gross round of 70, level par, which would pip a logjam of those one worse on 71 (+1), including playing partners +2 handicap Jack Bigham of Harpenden and Zach Little of West Herts, along with George Wright of Bishop's Stortford. In fact George Durkan's birdie 4 on the long par 5 18th hole would prove the key to the title, edging past his playing partners.

George Wright would have the consolation of picking up the Duke Trophy for the Best U16 gross score (discounting George Durkan's championship winning score, as the one prize rule was in effect) and likewise Zach would receive the James Cup for the Best U15 gross score. In the U14 category Kesir Sangha of Letchworth edged the field with a gross 79 (+9) to receive the Harkett Trophy.

The best nett score on the day was achieved by 8 handicap Adam Ward of West Herts with a stunning nett 65 (-5).

Other prize winners on the day were 20 handicap Toby Goodhind of Aldwickbury Park with a nett 69 (-1) in the U14 handicap category, 5 handicap Oscar Cuthbert with a nett 68 (-2) in the U15 handicap category and Lewis Slade of West Herts with a nett 72 (+2) in the U16 handicap category.

The CSS was 71 against the course par of 70 and the SSS of 72.

Congratulations to all the prizewinners and we look forward to next years Boys Under 16 Championship, which will take place at Hadley Wood GC on the corresponding Thursday in the School Half Term holidays, Thursday 29th October 2020.

Winter well!!
