Men's Seniors Team win Southern Counties Foursomes Qualifier

HERTS MEN'S SENIORS TEAM, FROM L TO R, BACK ROW TYE CARTER, SIMON KAY, JOHN AMBRIDGE, IAN FOSTER, HUGH WIKNER (PRESIDENT), FRONT ROW NICK O'BYRNE (MANAGER), PAUL NANCARROW, MATTHEW COHEN, DAVID SCAMMELL, GORDON STEWART, MIKE READY AND CHARLES MCKAY

Report by Manager Nick O'Byrne;

The Men's Seniors team were in action yesterday (8th August) playing in the Southern Counties Seniors Foursomes Qualifier, played over 36 holes at Highgate Golf Club in North London.

The event is round robin 18 hole foursomes match play throughout the day against Essex, Kent and Middlesex.

The course was in excellent condition with firm quick greens measuring 11 on the stimpmetre.

The morning session in the first match out saw Tyrone Carter and Paul Nancarrow see off the top Middlesex pair in a close encounter winning 2/1.

Dave Scammell playing with debutant Charles McKay were never in any trouble against Middlesex opposition winning 4/3.

With Mike Ready and Ian Foster seeing of Essex with a 5/4 victory and Simon Kay and Matt Cohen beating opposition from Kent also winning 5/4, with the 2 tee start we had 4 matches in the bag before the bar opened at 11.00am!

Team manager Nick O'Byrne was in early action having to attend to Ian Foster whom only realised after 5 holes that he hadn’t changed into his golf shoes!

Last match out on the course was John Ambridge and Gordon Stewart who kept us waiting a little before registering a 2/1 victory giving us a clean sweep of 5 matches in the morning and a clear lead over both Kent and Essex, who both registered 2 wins each and Middlesex with one win. Additionally our holes up was a very healthy +18.

Therefore at least 2 wins were required in afternoon to win and qualify through the Final, although mathematically just 1 win could of see us through with the right results against the right counties.

The afternoon matches proved to be more difficult with only Tyrone and Paul in command.

John and Gordon were in a very tight tussle with not more than a hole in it, Mike and Ian also very tight and both pairs Dave and Charles, and Simon and Matt were down early on.

After 15 holes Tye and Paul were 2up, whilst at the same time John and Gordon 1 down, Mike struggling with a bad back and Ian still all square, Dave and Charles 2 down, and Simon and Matt 3 down. So where were the 2 points coming from especially when events on the course turned for the worse when Tye and Paul lost 16 & 17 to be back to all square and John and Gordon lost their match! So at that stage we had lost 1 match, down in 2 matches and square in 2 matches so crossing the line was looking like a tall order.

However a solid par from Tye and Paul on the last hole saw them home 1up, and this was soon followed with the news that Mike and Ian won 2 quick holes to win 2/1 , which meant we had crossed the line and got the 7 points required. This however was followed up with a victory from Simon and Matt who had battled back from 3 down to win on the last. As did Dave and Charlie battle back but only to lose on the last.

We eventually finished comfortable winners with 8 wins across the day, followed by Kent as runners-up with 5.5, Essex 4.5 and Middlesex 2.

A very good team showing.

Hertfordshire now go to the Final event being held at Exeter Golf & Country Club, Devon on Monday 16th September.
