Last green heartache for Men's Seniors Team

TYE CARTER ON THE 18TH GREEN AT MOOR PARK

Herts Men's Seniors entertained our old adversaries BB&O Seniors yesterday at Moor Park, for what has been in recent years the South East Seniors League decider and with the teams both very evenly matched was predicted to be a close tense and exciting occasion.

Once again yesterday was no different to recent matches with the tie going down to the last game on the last green.

Herts got off to a strong start and through the 8th were heading it being up in 6 matches, square in 3 and only down in 1. All looked very promising.

In the top match Simon Kay was having a close match with former Herts Men's Seniors Captain and National Seniors Champion Doug Cameron, with Simon getting the better on the last hole to win 1up, Gordon Stewart having been up against Tim Whitaker, who birdied the 17th to get back to a/s and halved the last to finish all square. John Ambridge also had a tight match against George Best Wilson and also halved. Lewis Watcham was never in any trouble in beating Malcolm Reid 7/6 to put us 3/1 up, which was followed closely by another big winner Paul Nancarrow beating Cliff Peace 5/4. Mike Ready lost to Ashley Brewer 2/1 and Warwick Grant also lost to David Niven 4/3, but was followed with another good win from Steve Dawson who beat Billy Keon 6/5 to put Herts 5/3 up, with 2 matches still to come in.

With Dave Scammell losing to David Cromie, Tye Carter in the last match needed to avoid defeat against Mike Sanders for Herts to win, and being 2 up with 4 to go looked good.

However Mike single putted both the 15th and 16th greens to get back to all square and when he holed another 20 footer on the 17th looked like going 1up, but Tye manfully holed a 6 footer to half the hole and take it down the 18th a/s.

With both teams watching on Mike hit his tee shot on the par 3 finishing hole on the High course to about 5 feet so pressure on Tye who also hit a good tee shot to about 8ft. Tye’s putt cruelly lipped out and Mike Sanders calmly holed his 5 footer to win the hole, win his game 1up and level the match at 5-5.

For the 3rd year running the last putt on the last green in the last match has gone against us meaning results now need to go in our favour for us win the league this year.

Some good golf was played by both sides and for spectators and the team managers was exciting but very stressful and tense!

Well done guys for a good performance.
