HERTS BOYS TEAM, FROM L TO R, OLIVER BRUNT, GEORGE DURKAN, JACK BIGHAM, REIS SUART, DOMINIC CLEMONS, MATT GAUNTLETT. CASEY BLUNSUM & SAM CANEY
Newly promoted Ashridge scratch team provided a stern challenge for the County Boys in the annual match on Saturday 2 March.
The morning foursomes is a great opportunity for the boys to get to know the delights and intricacies of the scenic Ashridge course ahead of their afternoon singles.
The top match went to the 18th green before Boys Captain, Dominic Clemons partnering Jack Bigham secured the opening point, with a 1-Up win thanks to a long putt from Dominic from the bottom tier to a stone dead range to halve the hole. They had been dormie 2 up but lost the 17th to a birdie.
The second game also was decided on the last green, but went to Ashridge after a fightback from Casey Blunsum and Sam Caney. They needed to win the last hole but alas a par was not good enough as Owen Williams drained a birdie putt to close out a club victory.
Matthew Gauntlett and Oliver Brunt played solidly to secure a convincing 5&4 victory and in the last foursomes, the young pairing of Reis Suart and George Durkan held the upper hand to win on the 17th by 2&1 with both pairs securing birdie on this par 5 hole.
Apart from two games the afternoon singles were equally competitive. Sam Caney and Reis Suart both won convincingly 8&6. The 17th hole again saw the closure of 5 matches, with just George Durkan going all the way to the 18th before losing that hole and the match by 1-Hole.
The top two games went to the Herts boys with both Dominic and Matthew winning 2&1. Jack Bigham was beaten by the same margin by the redoubtably consistent Glenn Barrington. Stalwart, Chris Hewitt showed the importance of a good short game around the challenging greens before succumbing to his longer hitting opponent, Casey Blunsum 3&1. Having been 3 up on the 8th, Oliver Brunt lost by the same margin to James Smith as he went 3 under par over the first 6 holes of the back nine.
Overall a successful day for the boys winning by 8 points to 4.
Once again Hertfordshire Golf is grateful for the support and generosity of Ashridge in hosting this fixture.
