SOUTH HERTS GC - WINNERS OF THE MEN'S HERTS TEAM CUP 2018
JASON COURT OF SANDY LODGE, WINNER OF THE MEN'S MEMBERS CUP 2018
NIALL JOHNSTON OF LETCHWORTH, MEN'S ORDER OF MERIT WINNER 2018
The Men's Finals Day was played last Sunday (28th Oct) at Stocks GC, which saw the winners determined for the Men's Members Cup, a singles handicap matchplay KO event, the Men's Herts Team Cup, a fourball betterball team ko event and a new event for 2018, the Men's Order of Merit (MOOM) Final, an 18 hole scratch strokeplay event for the top 12 finishers in the MOOM table.
The final of the Members Cup was between Jason Court of Sandy Lodge, 3 handicap, and David Lees of West Herts, 4 handicap. The match was a close affair, but Jason edged out David by the narrow margin of 2&1 to take the title.
In the final of the Herts Team Cup, South Herts took on East Herts and again all 4 fourball betterball matches went at least to the 17th hole, but despite the close nature of each match, South Herts ended up 3.5-0.5 winners over East Herts.
In the MOOM Final, 5 of the top 12 finishers took part and scoring, despite the cold and windy conditions on the day, was excellent, displaying the array of talent in Herts Golf right now. Owen Benson of Redbourn, who earlier in the season won the prestigious Tillman Trophy at Moor Park, returned a gross 69 (-4) on the par 73 layout, with a back 9 of 33 (-4). Laurie Owen of Letchworth, Men's County Champion in 2015, returned a bogey free round of 69, but would lose on a back 9 countback to Owen with an inward 9 of 35 against Owen's 33. Owen's nett score of 72 against the CSS of 73 gave him a 0.1 handicap reduction and a return to +4, on +3.6, making Owen the 2nd lowest handicapped golfer in Herts, behind Rob Watkins of Hadley Wood, on +3.8. Winner of the MOOM this year Niall Johnston of Letchworth was awarded the Clive Harkett Salver on the day.
Our thanks go to Stocks GC for kindly hosting this event this year and all of the competitors were extremely complimentary about the course, in particular the greens which were fast and true and the fairways, which in spite of the harsh summer, were playing better than most local clubs.
Next year's Finals Day event will be at West Herts GC on Sunday 20th October and will include 2 Ladies' Finals for the 1st time, the Da Paula Cup, a singles matchplay KO event and the Powell Cup, a scratch foursomes KO event.
