MEN'S SENIORS TEAM, FROM L TO R, IAN FOSTER, BOB HEAD, BOB PEACOCK, MATTHEW COHEN, PHIL EMBLETON, TYE CARTER, NICK O'BYRNE (MANAGER), GORDON STEWART, DAVID SCAMMELL, PAUL NANCARROW & GAIUS POTTON.
REPORT FROM MEN'S SENIORS MANAGER NICK O'BYRNE:
A great team performance saw the Hertfordshire Seniors men’s team win the Southern Counties Men's Seniors 36 hole qualifying event at Bentley Golf Club yesterday (Tue 7 Aug).
The Hertfordshire team represented by Tyrone Carter & Paul Nancarrow, Gaius Potton & Phil Embleton, Gordon Stewart & Dave Scammell, Bob Peacock & Matthew Cohen, and Bob Head & Ian Foster finished on 8 points from a maximum of 10 with Essex in 2nd on 5, Kent 3rd on 4.5 and Middlesex with 2.5.
Bentley GC hosting the event was playing hard and running with a number of dog legs, blind holes and lots of water hazards, a number of which could not be seen from the tee.
Fortunately the entire team came for a practice round the day before and got to see how tricky the course was playing.
The format of 5 matches am and pm sees your pairings play a minimum of 3 matches against each of the other counties during the day.
The morning session had us play 2 pairs from both Kent and Middlesex, and 1 from Essex, and was led by Tye and Paul who had a very convincing 5/4 win against the strong Kent international pairing of Chris Reynolds and Richard Partridge. This was followed up by good wins from Gordon & Dave, and Bob & Ian and a half point from Bob and Matt giving us 3.5 points in 2nd place behind the holders Essex who were leading with 4 points.
Conditions were very hot and humid hitting 32 degrees which meant the water boy was very busy, and had to replenish stocks at lunch time with further supplies that were needed for the youngsters going out for for a 2nd round!
The afternoon session had us play 1 pairing from Kent, and 2 from both Middlesex and importantly Essex, which meant that qualifying for the 1st time since 2015 it was in our own hands.
We got off to a great start with an 8/7 win by Gaius and Phil, followed up with another convincing 5/3 win by Tye and Paul both over Middlesex.
The important matches were our 2 pairs playing against Essex, which saw Bob & Matt win 5/3, which meant if Gordon and Dave could win we were home and dry.
They came to the last 1up and gave what could be described as an interesting tactical display to secure the half on the hole and win their match 1up, meaning we were through.
Last pairing Bob and Ian with qualification already assured lost the last to halve their match, but were greeted on the 18th green by the rest of the team.
A splendid pm session saw us unbeaten, taking 4.5 pts out of 5 and the team coming out as comfortable winners.
The 36 hole final against the other 3 qualifying counties will be at Ealing GC, Middlesex on Tuesday 18th September.
The picture above is of the team on the 18th just after the last match had completed. They were all happy really, but just exhausted!!
WAS THIS TYE'S DRIVE OR NOT??!!
