DOMINIC CLEMONS OF HANBURY MANOR - BOYS CHAMPION 2018
DOMINIC BEING PRESENTED THE BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY BY HERTFORDSHIRE GOLF PRESIDENT ELECT HUGH WIKNER
BOYS TEAM CHAMPIONS, FROM L TO R, JACK BIGHAM, HARRY BIGHAM & NICK DENTON
16-year-old England Boys International Dominic Clemons of Hanbury Manor won both the main overall Boys Championship and the Malcolm Reid Trophy for the Best Under 16 (as of 01/01) gross score at South Herts yesterday (Mon 30 July), after an exciting sudden death playoff with 14-year-old Jack Bigham of Redbourn.
The course was playing extremely well, a day after their own Club Championship event and the rain over the weekend had softened the course to allow more target orientated golf. This resulted in 5 scores of 71 (-1) or better in the am round and 5 scores again in the pm round.
Both Dominic and Jack had tied on a gross score of 142 (-2) after 36 holes after Jack had led after the morning round with an excellent score of 69 (-3). Dominic had already won the Malcolm Reid Trophy by virtue of a better afternoon round, 71 vs Jack’s 73, but a playoff was required to determine the overall Boys Champion.
A sudden death play-off was utilised, using holes 1, 2 and 9 if required. The short par 4th 1st was all that was required however after Dominic hit a well struck drive into the greenside bunker and got his ball up and down for a birdie 3 and the win after Jack made a regulation par 4 from the right rough.
In 3rd position was another youngster George Durkan of Bishop’s Stortford a shot back from the playoff on 143 (-1), scores of 72 and 71.
Best score on the day was achieved in the pm round by Abhishek Pankhania of Moor Park with an superb 68 (-4).
Jack did have the consolation of being part of the winning Redbourn team with his brother Harry, himself achieving a good score of 146 (+2) for the day and Nick Denton. Defending Champions Bishop’s Stortford made an excellent defence of their title in 2nd but the winning flag will be at Redbourn this year.
The CSS for both rounds was 72 against the par and SSS of 72.
Dominic will now represent Hertfordshire Golf at the Boys Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa in September.
Our thanks go to South Herts for hosting the event in excellent fashion, as always.
