FROM L TO R, GEORGE WRIGHT, GREG HURLEY, REIS STUART & GEORGE DURKAN, ALL PRIZE WINNERS AT THE RECENT SOUTH EAST SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP
Greg Hurley from The Hertfordshire Golf Club and St Albans School, won the South East Schools Championship Boys individual title, played at Bury St Edmunds GC last Friday (1st June) with a gross total of 141 (-3) by one shot from fellow Hertfordshire golfer Matt Gauntlett of West Herts.
Greg was first to tee off at 8am and was in joint first place after one round at 1-under-par. His second round of 2-under-par ensured his win…by just one shot.
“I had two pretty solid rounds and just tried to make as many birdies as possible,” said Greg, who more than made up for 5 frustrating dropped shots over the two rounds. “I am just so pleased to be in the National Finals.”
The national schools finals take place in Herts later this month at The Shire London Golf Club on Monday, June 25th. A total of 10 boys and 5 girls, including the new champions, gained automatic qualification for the event.
In the girls individual event Herts also tasted success with Ellen Hume of Mill Green in 2nd position and Millie Pratten of Essendon in 3rd, with Millie equaling the Ladies course record in the afternoon round with a 4 under par gross 70.
More than 60 youngsters from seven counties teed off at Bury St Edmunds in the NASUWT-sponsored event and there was some impressive scoring on the day, which meant the team competition was hotly contested between home-team Suffolk, Norfolk, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Buckinghamshire. In the end, Hertfordshire took both team prizes with Essex second in the Boys’ section and Norfolk second for the girls.
