Max Hopkins wins Telegraph Junior Championship in Portugal

Our current Boys Champion 14 year old Max Hopkins of Bishops Stortford won the Telegraph Junior Championship held last week (8-10 Nov) at Quinta do Lago on the Portuguese Algarve.

The Telegraph Junior Championship is considered one of the major junior events in the calendar, with over 21,000 junior golfers taking part in qualifiers for the final played over the course of the season up and down GB&I. Former winners of the event include Justin Rose, Andrew Coltart and Matthew Fitzpatrick and the event has had considerable Hertfordshire success with wins for David Griffiths of West Herts in 1998 at Sea Island, Georgia, USA and just last year when Harry Goddard of Hanbury Manor won the Boys event and Hannah Screen of Berkhamsted won the Girls event.

This year of the 12 boys making up the field an incredible 4 were from Hertfordshire, the aforementioned Hopkins and Goddard, along with Adam Tridgell of Mill Green and Greg Hurley of The Hertfordshire. Max qualified for his am round of 66 in the Boys Championship at Berkhamsted back in July, Harry qualified by virtue of being the defending champion, Adam qualified for his round of 66 achieved in the Berkhamsted Junior Open, while Greg qualified for his round of 66 on the High Course at Moor Park for their Junior Stag event.

Max would shoot a 3 round total of 214 (-2), rounds of 71,72,71, to win by 3 shots from his nearest rival Ben Jones of Northamptonshire. Harry would be our next best in a tie for 8th place on 224 (+8), while Adam finished in a tie for 9th and Greg finished in 12th.
