SAM CANEY OF MILL GREEN - BOYS UNDER 16 CHAMPION 2017
66 junior golfers congregated at Bishops Stortford last week (Thu 26 Oct) in the half term week for the Boys Under 16 Championship, the traditional curtain closing event for the HGU playing season.
The early starters were greeted by a foggy gloom which failed to shift in time for the 9am scheduled start and as such all tee times were required to be delayed by 90 minutes, with the field eventually starting from a 2 tee start at 10.30am.
The course played long on the day with the wet and juicy rough making control of the ball, should the players miss the short fairway grass, very difficult indeed. The weather remained gloomy for the day with intermittent showers throughout.
Despite the conditions and the circumstances experienced, the scoring on the day was very good and again highlighted the abundance of talent we have in Hertfordshire, particularly in these younger age groups. The ages of the competitors ranged from 9 to 16 and the handicaps from 28 to +1.
The best gross scores on the day were returned by Sam Caney of Mill Green and Max Hopkins of the host club who both returned 2 under scores of 69 (-2). A sudden death playoff was required to determine the winner, starting from the 1st tee. Both players would par the downhill dogleg 1st hole but the playoff was decided on the 18th hole, the 2nd hole of the playoff. Max, who bogeyed the 18th hole in normal play, drove out of position and missed the green to the left. Sam played the hole solidly and when Max failed to get up and down, Sam calmly two putted for par and the victory over the local boy.
Sam also achieved the best nett score on the day but as competitors can only win one prize the best handicap prize was awarded to Callum Gardiner of Bishops Stortford with a nett 68.
The CSS on the day was 71 against the par and SSS of 71.
