SENIOR TEAM, FROM L TO R, BACK ROW, DAVID SCAMMELL, BOB PEACOCK. LEWIS WATCHAM, NIGEL LAWRENCE, SIMON KAY, TYE CARTER, PHIL EMBLETON, GORDON STEWART. FRONT ROW, NICK O'BYRNE (MANAGER), WARWICK GRANT & GAIUS POTTON.
REPORT BY SENIORS MANAGER NICK O'BYRNE:
Following on from winning the South East League Northern section, the Hertfordshire Seniors took on Southern League and last years South Eastern counties winners Hampshire at The Bedfordshire GC.
With John Ambridge away at the South African seniors, and injuries to both Mike Ready and Bob Head, Lewis Watcham and last minute call up Nigel Lawrence made their debuts.
The Wednesday practice round found the course to be in excellent condition with good fairways and quick true greens. All were very complimentary.
With 9.00am for the first match approaching, there was some debate as to playibility due to cool, damp foggy conditions with poor visibility, however play commenced with Lewis Watcham in the top match paired against Bobby Eggo, a former Walker cup player.
Whilst a half was creditable result Lewis played the last in impeccable fashion for his par, whilst his opponent was rather less convincing for his, but nevertheless made his par all the same for a halved match.
Bob Peacock played number 2 and was drawn against former professional and current England Seniors International Alan Mew who played very well to record a point for Hampshire.
Tye Carter played solidly and was always in control against Trevor Gray and at this stage with Simon Kay well ahead and other matches behind looking in good shape, we were ahead and looking like we would scrape past the winning line.
Warwick Grant playing number 8 won early so with 3.5 points in the bag we were looking for 2 more points from the 5 matches left on the course. Nigel Lawrence making his debut lost to some very good golf from his opponent who was several under par.
3.3 - 2.5 with 4 matches left on the course. Gordon Stewart lost a tight match on the last and Phil Embleton was all square with 3 to go had 2 birdies scored against him to lose 2/1.
Leaving the evergreen Gauis and Dave Scammell on the course, but with Gauis dormy 2 down and Dave all square Gauis gave us some hope in at least drawing with a birdie on the 17th, but could not birdie the last leaving Hampshire 5.5/3.5 ahead.
Last man Dave was all square with 3 to go and agreed to a half result leaving Hampshire as 6/4 winners.
Whilst the result was disappointing we not only lost to a very good side, but we also had some very good results to get there.
Mike Ready our Captain would like to thank all those who have represented the county this season and also to those in the squad pressing for a place.
Seniors golf is improving every year, and we have a large squad with competition for selection getting harder all the time.
Hopefully next year we will go that extra mile.
