EG CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS WEEKEND

TONY WILKINS AND FAMILY PICTURED AFTER WINNING THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP EARLIER IN THE YEAR

In a weather affected Champion of Champions weekend of events, the 3 Herts representatives performed well and all finished in highly respectable positions.

On the Saturday (16th September) The Boys Champion of Champions event takes place over the Hotchkin course at Woodhall Spa, normally over 36 holes. However some highly inclement weather caused the greens to flood and the event to be reduced to just 18 holes. Our representative 14 year old Max Hopkins of Bishops Stortford, who won the HGU Boys Championship at Berkhamsted in July, shot a round of 75 (+2) to finish in a tie for 11th position, 5 shots off the eventual winner, Jacob Kelso of Kent, who shot a round of 70 (-3).

The Seniors Champion of Champions event is played over the Saturday and the Sunday (17th September), with 18 holes played each day. Despite the best efforts of the weather with rain on the Saturday and fog on the Sunday morning, the event was still played over 36 holes. Our representative, Ty Carter of Stevenage who won the HGU Seniors Championship last month, shot rounds of 77-72 for a total of 149 (+3) to finish in a tie for 4th position. Ty finished just 3 shots of the runner up position but the event was emphatically won by Trevor Foster of Lancashire with a highly impressive score of 138 (-8), 11 shots ahead of our own Tye.

The Mens Champion of Champions event is played over 36 holes on the Sunday, but with the aforementioned 3 fog delay, only 18 holes were possible to played on the day. Our representative Tony Wilkins of Harpenden Common, who won the County Championship at Brookmans Park back in June, shot an excellent round of 71 (-2) to finish in a tie for 4th position, 2 shots off the eventual winner Simon Richardson of Lincolnshire with a 69 (-4). This performance caps off a terrific year for Tony, who not only won the County Championship, but was part of the winning Harpenden Common Champion Club team, who go to East Devon this coming weekend (23-24 September) to represent Herts in the EG Champion Club Final, but also added the Men's Order of Merit (MOOM) crown too.

Congratulations to Max, Ty and Tony for their excellent performances.
