Holders Herts tie but are KO'd by Kent in Seniors Foursomes

Wed 28th Jul
Holders Hertfordshire were knocked out of the Southern Counties Seniors Foursomes in the cruellest way after they tied with favourites Kent in their qualifier at Upminster on July 26.

Kent's strong opening pairings of Chris Reynolds/Chris Buckley and Dave Jessup/Roger Salmon put them 2-0 up in the best of 5 match. Reynolds and Buckley beat Herts captain Gaius Potton (pictured) and Terry Croker 3&1, while Jessup and Salmon beat Peter Bax and Bill McIntyre by the same score.

Herts fought back in games 3 and 4.

Martin McKenna and Tom McEvoy won 1 up, and Ben Brown partnered by Doug Cameron won 4&3.

Then Donald Longmuir and Norman Cameron battled for a hard-fought half int e final game, leaving the scores tied at 2.5 each.

Under the rules of the competition, game points were then taken into consideration only to find they were halved (8-8). So according to the rules the opening game decided the outcome, and that was Reynolds and Buckley - which meant that Kent progressed and Herts were eliminated.

Kent won through in the afternoon as well, and now go to the final in October.
