BOYS TEAM FINISH 4TH IN SOUTH EAST BOYS QUALIFIER
THE HERTS BOYS SQUAD, FROM L TO R, JACK KELLY, MATTHEW GREEN, GREG HURLEY. GEORGE ALBONE, DANNY DANIELS, JON HOPKINS, HARRY GILLESPIE & CHARLIE WILKINSON
The Herts Boys team went to Woodbridge GC in Suffolk this week (Thu 13 July) for their biggest team event of the year, the England Golf South East Group Boys Qualifier. This event sees all 11 South East counties send their 6 best Boys players to play a 36 hole gross event to determine the county who will represent the South East Group at the England Golf Boys County Championship later in the year.
Unlike the Men's equivalent event, the Boys version is played using the best 5 scores from the 6 players per round.
Herts Boys won this qualifier last year at Kings Lynn, Norfolk and played in the National Final event at Cumberwell Park, Wiltshire. The team were fortunate enough to call upon the services of several of the team who played last year, most notably Boys Captain and England Boy International Danny Daniels, who just last week had played in the Men's qualifier for Herts Men at Sheringham in Norfolk.
Our boys team had an excellent morning round and were to lie in 2nd place with a very tidy score of 356 (+6). Best individual score achieved by a Herts player was the aforementioned Danny Daniels with a one under par 69.
The halfway leaders were BB&O, with a total of 353 (+3), just three shots ahead of Herts.
However our team were to fall away over the last 9 holes of the event and although the Essex team pushed them hard, BB&O ran out the event winners with a cumulative total of 711 (+11), with our team some 15 shots back in 4th place on 726 (+26). Essex would be 2nd, just a shot behind the winners BB&O on 712 (+12), with Sussex just pipping us to a podium finish to take third by one shot on 725 (+25).
Danny Daniels would add an afternoon 68 (-2) for a 36 hole total of 137 (-3), which would be good enough for 2nd position in the individual event, one shot behind winner Arron Edwards-Hill of Essex on 136 (-4). Next best Hertfordshire player would be Greg Hurley in 24th place and Jon Hopkins in 25th place, both on 146 (+6) for the day.
