SENIORS EARN CREDITABLE DRAW AWAY IN ESSEX
HERTS SENIORS, FROM L TO R, HUGH JENKINSON, SIMON KAY, GORDON STEWART, TYE CARTER, DAVID SCAMMELL, BOB HEAD, MIKE READY, NEIL JACKSON, JOHN AMBRIDGE AND GAIUS POTTON
Our Seniors team battled for a draw with Essex 5-5 last week (Thu 6 July) at the 'inland links like' Orsett GC, located at the very south of the county. Essex have improved immeasurably at Senior level in the last few years and are now very competitive indeed and proved to be a real test, especially at a course not particuarly well known to many of our team.
The match proved to be a tale of two halves, with the middle half of the order all going to Essex in matches 3 through 7, but thankful the 'top and tail' section went to Herts. John Ambridge and Gordon Stewart won their matches at 1 and 2 in the order respectively, while at the other end Neil Jackson, in his debut match for the County Seniors, and the ever reliable Hugh Jenkinson both won their matches. With one match left out on the course, Essex led 5-4 and Gaius Potton for Herts in Match 8 was all square with 1 to play. However Gaius played a tremendous approach shot into the last hole within a few inches of the hole and was conceded his putt for a birdie 3, which won the match and claimed the draw for Herts.
This result leaves Herts in a good position in the league with 2 fixtures remaining, vs Middlesex next month and vs BB&O in September, both 'at home', to be played at Moor Park. Should the result vs Middlesex be favourable then the BB&O match up could well be a potential title decider.
