HGU COLTS CHAMPION 2017: JACK SLATER (LETCHWORTH)
COLTS CHAMPION 2017 - JACK SLATER OF LETCHWORTH
Jack Slater continued his excellent 2017 season last Saturday (June 24), when he claimed the Colts Championship title with an excellent 36 hole gross total of 139 (-3) to win by 5 shots from his nearest rival and become the first Letchworth golfer to win the event in its history.
The event was played at the Old Fold Manor club in Barnet, famous for its difficult and smooth greens surfaces. The weather leading up to the event was hot and dry, which has made all the Herts courses play very firm and fast. Thankfully the weather on the day of the event was much cooler and much of the event was played with overcast skies and a reasonable breeze.
Jack returned a morning round of 68 (-3) to lead by 3 shots at the halfway point from Matt Gumble of The Hertfordshire and Louis Hindle of Harpenden Common, both on 71, level par.
The always steady and consistent Jack added to his morning round with an afternoon 71 (level) to extend his lead to 5 shots after Matt Gumble added an afternoon 73 for a total of 144 (+2), good enough for 2nd place. Incidentally Matt also finished runner up at Old Fold Manor in the Boys Championship in 2015. In 3rd place was long hitting junior golfer Jack Kelly of Sandy Lodge a further shot back on 145 (+3), rounds of 73 and 72.
Jack has certainly had an excellent season to date, finishing 2nd in the South East Links Championship in Kent and making his County 1st Team debut last month, winning both his matches in the process. By virtue of his victory, Jack will now represent Herts at the Prince of Wales Trophy for Under 21 golfers, held each year on the Duchess course at Woburn in August.
The CSS in both rounds was 72 against the par of 71 and the SSS of 72.
Next year's Colts Championship will be played at Harpenden (Hammonds End) GC on Sunday 24th June and we will return to Old Fold Manor GC for the 2018 County Championship, played between Friday 25th to Sunday 28th May.
