Herts still on course with 7.5-4.5 victory over Middlesex
Mon 19th JulHertfordshire maintained their 100 per cent record in the South East League with a 7.5-4.5 win over Middlesex at Old Fold Manor on July 18.
Once again Herts, sponsored by London Pride, made a strong strong start in the morning foursomes, taking them by 3.5-0.5.
In the afternoon singles, Middlesex put up a strong fight. But Herts held off the challenge with wins for Tom Shadbolt, Tom Speyer (pictured) and Tom Brown and halves for Matt Wallace and young Ben Smith who was 2 down with three to play against Tommy King. Ben birdied the formidable 18th to get his half.
Next match is against Bedfordshire on August 1.

Wallace wins inaugural individual trophy at County Qualifying
Sun 11th JulHerts Colts Champion Matt Wallace won the inaugural Peter Benka trophy for the best individual performance at the County Mens Qualifying event. His rounds of 68 and 66 (134) won by a shot from Neil Raymond (Hampshire) with Herts' Tom Speyer a shot further back.
His win follows on the back of Sam Cutting's individual win in the Boys Qualifying at Ealing in June...a great double for Hertfordshire.
Surrey President Martin Christmas presented the trophy at Stoneham.
Few men have been as prominent in golf for so long as Peter Benka, first as a player and then as an administrator.
He was British Youths' champion in 1967 and 1968 and an England international in 1967. He played in the Great Britain and Ireland team that lost the Walker Cup match in Milwaukee in 1969 by only two points, and 30 years later he was chairman of the Walker Cup selectors.
Forty years after playing for his country he was elected incoming president of the English Golf Union and would, but for his death in November 2007, have become president in February 2008.
Herts finish 2nd to home team Hampshire in County Qualifying
Sun 11th JulHertfordshire's mens team finished runners up in the EGU County Qualifying at Stoneham on July 10 - their best performance for some time. And Matt Wallace took the individual trophy for best score on the day (see separate story).
Herts, sponsored by London Pride, started well in the morning, with Tom Speyer's five-under 67 and Matt Wallace's four under 68 the pick of the scores.
They lay 3rd at lunchtime, six points behind home county Hampshire and two behind Surrey.
In the afternoon, Wallace and Speyer again performed brilliantly, Wallace shooting a six-under 66 and Speyer 69.
The rest of the team battled bravely on a hilly course which was hard and bouncy, but Hampshire proved too strong on the day and ran out winners by 19 points.
Next year's event will be in Hertfordshire, at Ashridge.

Hertfordshire in the black after tight win against BB&O
Tue 25th MayHertfordshire, sporting their new new black kit sponsored by London Pride, kicked off their SE Group League season with a narrow 7-5 win against BB&O at Old Fold Manor on May 23.
Herts had a terrific morning, winning all the foursomes to lead 4-0 at lunch.
Sam Claridge gave the home team a solid start in the afternoon, but the side managed only two other singles wins through Callum Shinksin and Matt Wallace. That was enough to see them home against tough opposition.
Shinkwin was in fantastic form. He was 9 under after 15 in beating Ashley Walton He made 2 eagles in 3 holes.. he carried the lake on the 400-plus 11th, ended up 15 yards from the pin, and chipped in for a 2.
He then hit driver and 9 iron on the par-5 13th and holed the putt!!
Herts Boys Champion Ben Smith (pictured) making his debut for the team, gained a win in the morning with Sam Claridge, and was unlucky to lose one down in the afternoon.
The next match is against Middlesex on July 18...also at Old Fold Manor.

Qualifiers for County Championship and Herts Salver
Wed 28th AprHere is the list of 50 direct entries for the County Championship at Sandy Lodge on June 11,12,14 and the 66 qualifiers for the Herts Salver at Harpenden on May 22. The top 16 from the Salver will also qualify for the County Championship.
The cut off for the County Championship was 1.3 (as at April 1).
Will Chambers got in ahead of Warren Kelly by virtue of his semi-final appearance in 2009. The quarter finalists from the previous year automatically get directly into the Championship.
Cut off for the Herts Salver was 3.0 (as at April 1).
Those tied on 3.0 were separated by ballot.
The draw for the Salver will be published by May 10.
Anyone not available to play in either event should contact their club, who will inform the County Secretary.

Sam Claridge takes Selborne Salver by a stroke after 68 and 64
Mon 19th AprHarpenden Common's Sam Claridge won the Selborne Salver at Blackmoor, Hampshire, on April 17. His rounds of 68 and 64 gave him a total of 132, and a one stroke win from Andy Sullivan of Nuneaton.
In tied third place was English and British Boys Golf Champion Tom Lewis of Welwyn Garden City Golf Club who recently won the Berkhamstead Trophy.
Lewis, posted rounds of 69 and 67 for 136, to be on the same mark as Jack Senior of Heysham Golf Club who carded a pair of 68s: Tommy King who posted rounds of 69 and 67; English International Eddie Pepperell (67 & 69), Matthew Nixon (69 & 67) and Walker Cup player Stiggy Hodgson (70 & 66) of Sunningdale Golf Club.
